Dakshina/Daniel Phoenix Singh Dance Company is an emerging dance company that performs and presents Indian dance forms, such as Bharata Natyam, and Modern dance, mirroring the multiple identities of second generation South Asians. The company combines the arts with social justice issues both by incorporating the themes into our work and via partnerships with local community centers and schools.

Performing `India: Then, Now, Forever' in University Hall, Sharjah on the occasion of Sharjah India Day
November 19th and 20th Performing `Sunehri Aashayen' in different labour camps of Dubai. Will be doing 6 to 9 shows of this production in two days' time.
Sunehri Aashayen' is a specially commissioned performance dealing, in an entertaining and sometimes light hearted way, with the many problems - psychological, economic, infrastructural and physical - that face the labourers from the Sub- continent on a daily basis. After research and consultations with several of the stakeholders concerned, and after viewing films made on the frightening conditions under which the labourers often live, the performance has been created to try to explore ways in which the workers themselves can help themselves. . Amongst others, the piece tries to touch upon barely spoken issues such as the absolute loneliness and feelings of isolation, alcoholism and the propensity to waste money rather than save.

Dr Mallika Sarabhai will speak on using the arts for social change at the prestigious and TED India Conference beginning in Mysore tomorrow. She will address the opening session titled “Fast Forward” on Thursday, 5 November 2009 from 11:00 am to 12:45 pm. .
